Language Delay

What is Language?

Language can be broken down into two major categories:

    • Receptive language: how a child comprehends and understands verbal and non-verbal (gestures, facial expressions, signs) communication
    • Expressive language: what a child is able to communicate verbally and non-verbally (signs and gestures)
  • What is a Language Delay?
  • A delay in language is determined based on age.  Children develop language at different rates, however, specific milestones do exist which establish typical development.  A child’s language is considered delayed when these milestones are not met within normal age ranges.

When should a speech and language therapist be consulted?

A speech and language therapist should be consulted if you or your child’s pediatrician has concerns, or if your child does not meet the established milestones listed in charts available through the websites below.
